One of the best ways to have lovely company is by having a pet. But these furry friends also need a lot of attention. Having a pet comes with responsibility. You must know how to take care of them and give them what they need. Unfortunately, some threats can easily come near your pets. Some may even be right in your home, like parasites. That’s why you should know how to protect and keep your pet free from parasites. In this article, we are going to talk about the parasites that may put your pet in danger and what to do about them.

To be able to know what to do, we must first identify and know the threats. A parasite is an animal that lives on another animal or a host. The parasite will then feed off the blood of the host or get food at the expense of the host. Some of the most common parasites found in pets are fleas, ticks, lice, mites, and worms. Most of them are acquired and spread through direct contact and ingestion.

One of the most common misconceptions the public has about how pets get these parasites is parasites fall into their hosts, which is not true. They get to their host by latching onto them when the host gets in contact with a bush or somewhere the parasite is in. These parasites may be small and seem harmless, but it brings great danger to your pets. They may bring a lot of diseases like amebiasis, Lyme fever; rocky mountain spotted fever, scabies, and Whipworm Disease. Though not all of them are deadly, if not treated, these diseases lead to long-term and permanent damage and even organ failure.

How To Prevent Your Pets From Catching Parasites

Keep your pets away from parasites’ habitats.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. It is better to keep your pets away from the places where parasites can be found than to look for a way to remove them from your pets. Places with tall, moist grass are the favorite spot of most parasites like ticks and fleas. Keep them away from dead plants and moist soil since parasitical worms usually live there. Lastly, keep them away from old mattresses, bedding, carpets, curtains, and furniture.

Keep your pets clean.

Keeping your pets clean is one way to keep them free from parasites. Grooming your pet regularly helps them have a body that parasites do not like. And in case they are already infested with parasites, you can quickly take action once you can spot them when your pet is regularly groomed.

Keep an eye on your pets.

Exercising and playing are just some things pets love to play. Though the outside world may bring danger to them, you cannot lock them up. So the best thing you can do is keep an eye on your pets when they are out. Whether you are going for a walk, hiking or camping, keep your eyes on them. Make sure that they are not rolling around on the ground or sniffing and eating the soil. Your pet may be curious, so they would go near or smell bushes, soil, plants, and basically anything that is new to them. If you notice that these may be habitats of parasites or they are about to lick those places, immediately keep them away.

Be careful of the animals that come near them.

One of the most common ways that pets get infested with parasites is by getting them from another host. Another animal or pet may already be infested with some kind of parasite. If your pet plays or interacts with them, there is a high chance that your pet may get infested too. So do some background checks when you take them on play dates.
